Undergraduate Projects (2001-2006)

This folder contains projects from my studies at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities (UMn) and the University of Edinburgh (UE).

“RevisedD+D” is my drawing and design portfolio covering work done at UMn from 2001 to 2004. revisedD+D

“MemStad” is from the first Historic Preservation course I took fall semester 2003 at UMn. It is about the preservation battle surrounding Memorial Stadium, the university’s on-campus stadium building that was built in 1924 and torn down in 1994. This is included because of my interest in how historic preservation relates to law. MemStad

“General Mills NPS Form” is my final project from that class. This project involved doing everything exactly as if I really were nominating the site I choose, a set of buildings that used to be a General Mills plant, for the National Registry. General Mills NP5 Form

In spring 2004, I made a visit to Terrace Hill, the official residence of Iowa’s Governor, because Iowa First Lady Christie Vilsack knew of my undergraduate course of study in Architecture and Journalism. The summer after my visit I wrote the notes I had taken during my visit into a newspaper or magazine style piece. This process lasted all summer and included probably the most rewrites and revisions I’ve done to a piece of writing prior to writing my master’s thesis. I have included this to show my familiarity with different styles of writing and different types of conservation projects. Terrace Hill

“Knox” is the final report for Historic Building Conservation, the second course in historic preservation I took at UMn, spring semester 2005. This was a hands-on-course taught primarily at Knox Presbyterian Church in St. Paul. For this course, the class was divided into groups and we were each assigned an area of the church to study. The coursework I have included is my final report from the class and it’s supporting documentation (a drawing I did of one of the exterior elevations to HABS specifications showing the changes made to the façade over the years, a map of the area that my group studied – the exterior wall of this map is the one that I drew in elevation- and a page of pictures taken to illustrate the final report). The Map shows the numbers my group assigned to apertures in the section of the building we evaluated and reference is made to the pictures in the report. Knox

“Holyrood” is my senior paper, a Post-Occupancy Evaluation made of the Scottish Parliament while I was interning there and studying at the University of Edinburgh my last year as an undergraduate (2005-06. I also studied at UE fall 2004). Holyrood
